4 aprile – CAPOLAVORO 2

ore 20-22, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Porta rossa (Il Terzo Paradiso) e Gianna Nannini, Mama, scultura vocale, 2007

tratti peculiari dell’iniziativa.
Valentina Valentini

Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo, in co-realization with Zerynthia, presents CAPOLAVORI, a cycle of three appointments that consists in an exhibition of a work of art and in a live reading of writings of the artists with different presences for each evening.

March 23, 8-10 p.m., CAPOLAVORO 1 dedicated to the exhibition of S.T. (Margherita di fuoco), 1967 by Jannis Kounellis with the participation of Carla Tatò (9 p.m.); April 4, 8-10 p.m., CAPOLAVORO 2, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Porta rossa (Il Terzo Paradiso) and Gianna Nannini, Mama, vocal sculpture, 2007 in the presence of Michelangelo Pistoletto and Gianna Nannini (9 p.m.);
May 9, 8-10pm, CAPOLAVORO 3, Pallas Athena, 2008 by Jimmie Durham with Maria Thereza Alves and Marco Quaglia (9pm).

“The idea behind the three appointments is to set up a work of contemporary art in a theatre space, in an area of Rome outside the art circuits, for a short period of time, like that of a performance. Each event includes the exhibition of a work in the theatre (from 20.00 to 22.00) and at 21.00, a meeting around the work and the artist. CAPOLAVORI experiences an unusual and attractive path: how to stage a work of art, how to expose it to new users in contexts other than museum spaces, how to accompany it with other actions that radiate in space and time and involve sight and hearing, mind and body. Work of visual art, theater, periphery, are the constitutive data of the project from which other peculiar traits of the initiative derive. The exhibition of the masterpiece, that is a work recognized as the pinnacle of the artist’s production, is removed from the conventional space of the museum and the gallery to find an ephemeral home on the stage of a theater. Here, the plastic work is staged and encouraged to dialogue with other languages: with the reciting voice of Carla Tatò, with the “vocal sculpture” of Gianna Nannini, with the poems of Jimmie Durham read by Marco Quaglia, thus creating a scenic act lasting 20/30 minutes. The dialogue or interplay (in jazz terms) is not engaged between the work and another from itself, but between two different productions of the same artist – the thoughts collected in The Loss of Viewpoint in the case of Kounellis and the poems of Jimmie Durham, thus highlighting a lesser-known aspect of the plastic artist, but deeply organic to his aesthetic vision.” – Valentina Valentini

THE THREE APPOINTMENTS:

March 23 – CAPOLAVORO ( MASTERPIECE ) 1
8-10 pm, Jannis Kounellis, S.T. (Margherita di fuoco), 1967
9 pm, Reading of texts by Jannis Kounellis, voice of Carla Tatò
S.t., 1967 (Margherita di fuoco) is a flower made of metal petals from the center of which comes out a flame, an internal heat that implies a metamorphosis of materials capable of transforming the state of things and the world.
Kounellis says: “for me, the flame and the parrot (referring to another of his works ndr) are the same thing, a living thing that manifests itself aggressively, but neither the flower nor the parrot would make sense if they did not have an iron support.
They are alive and real, but they are signs of an image built on a support, so in the end they are paintings. To those who ask me if I am a realistic painter, I say no. Realism represents, while I present.”
S.t.,1967 was made for the exhibition: The Space of the Elements. Fire, Image, Water, Earth at the Galleria l’Attico, Rome.

April 4 – CAPOLAVORO (MASTERPIECE) 2
8-10 pm, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Porta rossa (Il Terzo Paradiso) and Gianna Nannini, Mama, vocal sculpture, 2007
9 pm, Dialogue between Gianna Nannini and Michelangelo Pistoletto

Porta rossa (Il Terzo Paradiso) was born from the artistic collaboration between Gianna Nannini and Michelangelo Pistoletto, one from the world of music, the other from the world of visual arts, who merge two different disciplines and languages. La Porta Rossa was presented for the first time in the bunKerart space in Milan in 2007, curated by RAM radioartemobile, on the occasion of the exhibition Suono e Forma – Il Terzo Paradiso. The “vocal sculpture” Mama by Gianna Nannini allows the user to experience emotionally a total immersion in the voice.

May 9 – CAPOLAVORO ( MASTERPIECE) 3
8-10 pm, Jimmie Durham, Pallas Athena, 2008
9 pm, Introduction by Maria Thereza Alves, poems by JIMMIE DURHAM read by Daniele Timpano, translations by Sacha Piersanti

On 9 May the Quarticciolo Library Theater, in co-realization with Zerynthia, hosts the third appointment of the “Masterpieces” project with the evening MASTERPIECE 3 dedicated to Jimmie Durham considered one of the most influential and innovative sculptors in the history of contemporary art but also a writer , essayist, poet, performer and activist, who passed away last year. Companion of the Brazilian artist Maria Thereza Alves – who introduces the evening – the American artist is evoked both by his work of 2008 PALLAS ATHENA on display in the theater from 8 pm, and by his verses, read live for the occasion by Daniele Tympanum (9 pm), the film The Pursuit of Happiness by Jimmie Durham and Maria Thereza Alves will also be screened during the evening.

In Durham’s work, ideas are stimulated through the juxtaposition of constantly changing materials. This is how assemblies and installations are born that aim at overcoming the purely visual effect by creating a conceptual space that causes the continuous shift of meanings, as happens in Pallas Athena. The artist explores the relationships between form and concept. In his work, words have the ability to evoke images in the memory that convey ideas. Engaged in the civil rights movements of African Americans and Native Americans in the 1960s and 1970s, Durham won the Robert Rauschenberg Award in 2017, while in 2019 he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 58th Biennale of ‘Contemporary Art of Venice.
