From mute words to the silence of children, from spiritual places to silence in the form of peace, silence is like nature and like ambience. Silence in reality does not exist, it is us who isolate ourselves to find silence within; art and sound too are silence. (Paolo Coteni)  The Paliano Town Council presents INSIEME IN SILENZIO (TOGETHER IN SILENCE) curated by Zerynthia, Voluntary Contemporary Art Association, the 2nd edition of an education project that this year sees the involvement of the Fine Art Academies of L'Aquila, Brera, Rome, the Istituto Europeo di Design of Rome (IED) and two foreign institutes, Villa Arson of Nice and the École nationale supérieure d'arts de Paris-Cergy. The students selected by the institutes participate in a three-day workshop run Paolo Coteni, one of the first tutors to teach sound art in Italy. A course of sound research in order to create a collective work: a sound portrait of the city of Paliano. The event will be accompanied by a series of sound art and video pieces located in various parts of the city: the Colonna  Chapel in Contrada Cervinara, the hall of the ex Pretura, the Wine Museum–Municipal Winery, the Paliano City Hall (that will function as a workshop for the selected students), the Choir and the Library of the Monastery of Santa Maria di Pugliano. There will be sound and video works by: Arturas Bumsteinas, Francesco Fonassi, Liliana Moro, Fabio Perletta, Dmitry Prigov, Donatella Spaziani, Vladimir Tarasov, Antonio Trimani, Fosco Valentini with the poet Francesco Serrao and tracks by the Ensemble Georgika. Exhibited in the town centre will be the bright moon (My Private Moon) by Leonid Tishkov. The elementary schools of Paliano will be take part in a workshop curated by NOW New Operation Wave. The children will be the protagonists of a group performance in the streets of Paliano creating a true "walls of silence".  On Saturday 18thNovember at 15.30 in the hall of the ex Pretura del Comune there will be a round table on the theme of silence, curated and moderated by Riccardo Giagni, musicologist and composer. Taking part will be experts on the subject from the visual, literary and musical spheres: Marina Beer, Federico Capitoni, Cecilia Casorati, Paolo Coteni, Giuseppe Di Giugno. "Maybe only silence really exists" (José Saramago). A catalogue will be produced bearing witness to the various phases of the project.

Sound art is increasingly, in the last few years, the center of the interest of artists, curators and scholars, and it is an innovative field of experimentation, study and research within the territories of contemporary art. It has been recognized as a discipline and a category generated by a series of knowledge models related to the cultural tradition of Western Europe and of the anglosphere. Sound art is today an environment in which emerge a series of practices that insist on ‘other’ geographic, aesthetic and cultural coordinates. In this moving and expanding field, it’s highlighted the work carried out in Chile by the research group that revolves around the Tsonami festival in Valparaíso, in which is applied and shared the work developed by artists who experiment methods and processes in which sound intersects with digital technologies and with unconventional approaches to listening. Otros Sonidos, Otros Paisajes is a journey built along unusual guidelines, in a sound deriving towards a geographic South crushed in a series of acoustic ‘routes’ that question the meaning of a linear story, interrogated through patches of listening that allow “to hear it” and capture its hidden sides. Through the perspective of sound art the sound, an element often subordinated to the visual sphere in speeches on art, emerges as a language and standalone device, which can question a set of approved paradigms, exceeding a purely musicological framing. Otros Sonidos, Otros Paisajes is a space in which the reflection on the theme of the ‘alterity’ of sound art in the Southern hemisphere intertwines with a series of evidences that involve Chilean landscapes, places and geographies from Atacama desert to Patagonia, from the suburbs of Santiago to the region of Bío, ending in the extreme south to Antarctica. This exhibition, which includes the installation of a series of sound works made by five Chilean artists, is the first ever event dedicated specifically to Chilean sound art in Europe and it marks the further step of a collaboration between the Chilean Embassy and Interferenze and Tsonami festivals, inaugurated on the occasion of the “Nuovi Suoni dell’Appennino” project (2016), during which the Chilean sound artist Fernando Godoy was a guest as the artist-in-residence in two projects (Liminaria and Pollinaria) held in as many rural areas in Campania and Abruzzo.

For years the D/A/C (Shared Artistic Denomination) meetings have proposed the idea that it is necessary to construct a network of relations, to find alternative ways to open up to the world of business, something that often means being surprised by the dynamics of production, by the logic of the market, by the risk of associations. Today, after that meeting, six artists exhibit in a communal space with works born from commissions within the world of industry. These are works attempting to “slip” away from current practices, in order to bypass an ever more monolithic artistic model, a system of contemporary art that tends towards conforming modalities of production and reception. The meeting with industries is, as such, not only “useful” but “essential” – for artists and businessmen alike – as it offers a miraculously free space for research, a place in which to lose the distinction between subject and product and to rethink art as a mere relationship, system, game. It is this inclination that runs through the works on show. First, Fabrice Hyber, who with his POFs (Prototypes d’Objets en Fonctionnement) reinvents the forms and functions of everyday objects.  Hyber even set up an association, UR (Unlimited Responsibility), to produce his pieces and those of other artists, but above all to bring art into the universe of consumption, demystifying it with the power of his irony: “POFs are openings,” he explains, “possibilities”. This is the responsibility that the artist takes on, allowing him to have a vital function in society. In this direction, Donatella Spaziani sees industrial and artisanal production as an aesthetic space, a process in which to graft her own intervention, not to “adorn” or “embellish” it, but to modify the finality and results of the fabrication, marking an existential presence living inside the produced object: as such the body becomes a measurement, a template that appears in a domestic space, on the walls, on the tiles and, at the same time, that constitutes the form moulding the seats and mattresses projected. Athina Ioannou, on the other hand, considers the artist himself as a business, the pictorial work of whom begins with the design of an element – in this case a table – that then spreads over and polarises the space, investing it with a rhythm of light and colour modules. Antonello Curcio uses industrial techniques to create pictorial quotations transferred onto Toile de Jouy tablecloths, while Florent Lamouroux is concerned with the symbols of fabrication: his works are a “supplementary production of industry”, where the gestures, uniforms and objects become icons with which the artists measures himself. Lastly, Benjamin Sabatier creates predefined systems inviting the public to produce artwork by following the given rules. His research quotes experiences that have marked the relationships between industry and artists and that today can be reread with full awareness. What does Capri have to do with all this? A lot, when one thinks of its role as a “free port”, as an international showcase that for thousands of years has been the stage for the extravagances of power.  In Capri these objects, far from the factories and museums, find verification amid the neoclassical echoes of the garden of Federico Guiscardo, a small arena in which to measure the irony of the swings and fountains, masks, tables and pavings, in one of the most playful places ever.     Giuliano Sergio   PARTECIPANTS Artists: Antonello Curcio, Fabrice Hyber, Athina Ioannou, Florent Lamouroux, Benjamin Sabatier e Donatella Spaziani.
